Wet Hare

The following is excerpted from The Hare by Jill Mason.

There are many accounts of hares swimming voluntarily or when chased by dogs. Distances of up to a mile across water, the sea included, have been recorded.

On one occasion a man fishing from the beach in north Norfolk witnessed a hare, for no apparent reason, running over the shingle bank and out into the sea. It swam parallel with the beach for several yards before returning to the shore where it shook itself and disappeared back over the bank.

The most commonly-held theory for this behaviour is that the animal in question is attempting to rid itself of fleas and lice.
